Kaiku Berri is a contemporary reinterpretation of the traditional Basque-Navarrese kaiku, a wooden vessel historically used for milking, transporting, and heating milk, as well as for the preparation of cuajada (curd). The project transforms this vernacular object into a contemporary domestic device by incorporating an electric system designed to heat milk and simplify the preparation of cuajada within an everyday setting. While preserving traditional elements such as the birch lid and the vessel’s overall structure, the project explores how cultural objects can be updated and adapted to new ways of living without losing their historical and symbolic significance.
Through different formal variations of the handle and structure, Kaiku Berri reflects on design, tradition, and cultural continuity, understanding the object not as a nostalgic artefact but as a domestic technology still capable of evolving. The project received recognition at Selected Bilbao and the European Design Awards in 2020.

Kaiku Berri es una reinterpretación contemporánea del kaiku tradicional vasco-navarro, un recipiente de madera utilizado históricamente para ordeñar, transportar y calentar la leche, así como para la preparación de cuajada. La propuesta transforma este objeto vernacular en un dispositivo doméstico contemporáneo, incorporando un sistema eléctrico diseñado para calentar la leche y facilitar el proceso de elaboración de cuajada dentro de un entorno cotidiano. Manteniendo elementos tradicionales como la tapa de abedul y la estructura general del recipiente, el proyecto explora cómo ciertos objetos culturales pueden actualizarse y adaptarse a nuevas formas de vida sin perder su carga histórica y simbólica.
A través de distintas variaciones formales del mango y la estructura, Kaiku Berri plantea una reflexión sobre diseño, tradición y continuidad cultural, entendiendo el objeto no como una pieza nostálgica, sino como una tecnología doméstica todavía capaz de evolucionar. El proyecto recibió reconocimiento en Selected Bilbao y en los European Design Awards en 2020.
